Magic at the wonderful City of Derry
A jam-packed playing hall was buzzing with players competing in the City of Derry Rapid Championships on Saturday 9th September 2023. It was held within the Walls of Derry at Butcher’s Gate at the Maldron Hotel, kindly sponsored by the American Football team ‘The Donegal/Derry Vipers’. It was a 7 round FIDE-rated tournament, with 20 minutes each per round, organised by Brendan Jamison for the City of Derry Chess Club. Recently elected Chair of the Club, Leroy Harris, presented the prizes in his Vipers top!

The 3rd FIDE event in the rapid series will be held at Groomsport on Saturday 23rd September, the annual Bangor Congress, which is 6 rounds of 30+0. Enter early if you’re keen to play. £12. See info on UCU site, on the event section.
Remember we are now into the new chess season, so UCU and ICU fees are now due again. Ideally, players should be paying their membership fees before enrolling in our local events but we can collect UCU fees on the morning of tournaments.
