Children’s Chess looking for trophy sponsors!

Each year the Ulster Chess Union’s, Mark Newman and Geoff Hindley, volunteer their time and efforts to run the wonderful children’s events at Methodist College Belfast. Volunteers are and have always welcome, but this year we are also seeking out sponsors to cover costs of trophies.

We are delighted to confirm that at the recent Annual General Meeting of the Ulster Chess Union, a motion was passed to name the monthly Children’s Chess events, the Newman Hindley Series in dedication of Mark Newman’s and Geoff Hindley’s voluntary service to children’s chess in Ulster.

Over the last number of years, the sponsorship which was used for trophies lapsed and the organisers were unable to purchase trophies for the events. Trophies were therefore only presented on the rare occasion or indeed only the bigger events, such as the grand prix prize giving held at Stormont each year. Many of those who attend these events which run from October to May, will no doubt have noticed that, unlike many other things these days, the entry fee has remained the same at the low price of £5 for the standard tournaments.

For the upcoming season, we are thrilled to confirm we have already obtained sponsorships for the first three events and will once again have trophies! We now hope to reach out to more businesses and organisations to complete the series, securing trophies for all events.
