Strand Rapid Championship 2022
The Strand Rapid Championship was held on Friday 23rd September 2022.
Congratulations to Mandar Tahmankar, crowned champion with 5.5/6 and a wonderful TPR of 2088. With 5/6, Ross Harris and Gatis Barbels won second and third place respectively. Both delivered a string of impressive victories against super tough opposition.
Leah Worbey was crowned Female Champion, meanwhile fellow Greenisland player Andrew Campbell ended with 4/6 to clinch the Grading Award. Amol Thoke of Civil Service also delivered an excellent 4/6 to secure the Junior Grading Prize. 'Best Newcomer' was awarded to Craig Robinson of Fruithill, his second award in two months. We love welcoming new players into our chess community.
The venue had a capacity for 24 players but organiser Brendan Jamison brought two tables up in his car to increase the numbers from 24 to 28. Sadly we still had quite a few on the waiting list that could not get a space in the competition.
This was the 3rd of 10 tournaments in the FIDE NI Rapid Grand Prix. Event 4 is in Newry on Sunday 9th October from 10:30am to 5:30pm, entry fee is £12. Please note these events are getting heavily oversubscribed and the deadline for Newry is Sunday 25th September. Book early to avoid disappointment. Entries to newrychess@gmail.com
