The Summer School 2026 takes place at Ormeau Park Bowling Club. August 5th,6th,7th.
There is nothing that beats having enthusisatic youngsters enjoying chess and learning to improve. We had 3 days, the challenge is to create activities that are interesting, enjoyable, challenging, alot of preparation goes into these 3 days.
A big thankyou to Ormeau Park Bowling Hall - provided by the Council and thanks to Damien Cunningham for enabling this. We had 18 young chess players studying chess for 3 days. With worksheets, activities and team matches. Also a big thanks to Geoff Hindley, Chris Kelly and Shannon Mckeown for vounteering and enabling this brilliant event.
The days follow a timetable of activities. Day one and a couple of worksheets. The Knight Pawn mower - a brilliant way of encouraging forward thinking - by challenging players to solve the problems without moving the pieces - these were created by GM Maurice Ashely ( https://schachtraining.de/pawn-mower-minispiele-fuer-das-erlernen-der-figuren/ ). The Bishop is stronger than the Knight? - Training Program for Juniors and 3rd Category players – Victor Golenischev.
We paired older youngsters with younger ones and encouraged coaching - perhaps a skill more useful than chess .... !

Each day ended with a team match. Where our pairs of players played each other. Each pair had to discuss their moves infront of the opposing side. and then agree a move. - lots of chess discussion and shared decision making.

Intertwined between worksheets we have two competitions. A Swiss Chess Tournament and a Swiss BattleChess tournament ( here players played both white and black ). Battlechess is a brilliant way of setting up an endgame of Kings and pawns,

With the worksheets came worked examples on our demo board. Players came up and offered their solutions which were discussed.

We break each day for lunch - with an opportunity to socialise and play some fantastic board games - like Othello, Janga, Fanarona, Mastermind, Mancala, connect 4 among others..
