The North Belfast Chess Team competed at the European Club Championships in Lubniewice, Poland 11th-13th September 1998. This report appeared originally in the 1997-1998 UCU Yearbook.
Roger Dodges Defeat
Ever since the 1972 Fischer-Spassky Worl Championship, the popularity of chess, especially among the young, has rocketed. Most schools have chess clubs, while most towns have clubs open to all ages, often using the library to meet in weekly. Two Belfast clubs are Fisherwick, Wilson House, Eglantine Avenue and CIYMS, Circular Road, off Holywood Road. Why not join a chess club now?
Lamb gets the chop
The next important local tournament is the Belfast Festival, held at Queen's University Student's Union scnak bar on May 20-22/5/83. There are three sections, the OPne (1,800 + grading), the Major (1,450 - 1,799) and the Minor (up to 1,499) with entry fees £8, £7 and £6 respectively *half fees for under-16's and O.A.P.s).
