Nemtzov Cup
The inaugural championship was held in November - December 1981, but subsequently the City of Belfast found its spot in the first half of the calendar year (which explains why there was no competition in 1982).
The Nemtzov Cup had originally been presented to the Belfast Chess Club as a trophy to go to the winner of that club's Championship. The winners of the trophy before the Belfast Chess Club folded in 1971 were H. Nelson (1966 and 1967), J. B. Tomson (1968), H. Nelson (1969), A. Cootes (1970) and J. Strawbridge (1971).
