During the three days topics such as the tools of chess players - the pins, forks, opposition. We played an individual tournament of chess, an individual tournament of battle chess, a team tournament of chess. Gareth took sessions on King opposition and exciting variations in the Giuoco Piano ending the 3 days with a look at some complicated but beautiful chess puzzles.

Results from the tournaments: Minaahil won a medal for winning the Individual tournament and Adam won a medal for winning the Battle Chess tournament.

Stephen won his first game against Peter Gayson rated 2160. He then lost games 2 and 3 and won game 4 against Sarah Longson (2074), loosing the next game and then drawing the sixth game against Paul Lam (2111), the next game was lost and the eighth game against Shabir Okhai (2111) another draw, the final 9th game was a loss. But what a brilliant result - 3 points and joint 85th place. Well done Stephen.

We have had 14 weeks with 6 weeks remaining followed on Wednesday 27th September by a handicap competition - less time the higher the rating difference and award ceremony.

A quick reminder to players - to qualify you need to play 10 games and there are rules about playing in the last 3 weeks :

Rules
1. Players must complete 10 games to be considered for prizes.
2. If a player does not play in two of the last three rounds they will be assumed to have played and lost 2 games. If they play only one then they will forfeit one game.
3. However if a player has played 14 or more games then they are exempt from rule 2.
4. Scores will be calculated on a percentage basis

Top Section

A tough section Stephen Rush looks set to win - but with 3 games he stills needs to score points. Other players have started well and then floundered. I have been beaten by most of them!

"Graeme McCormick and I had a "Wales" of a time in Llandudno although my "clan did know" where we went. The local Wetherspoon was opposite our hotel, we went up the tram to the mountain top because it was too windy for the cable car (very Alpine)and I got to see Elkie Brooks in concert at the Venue Cymru where the chess took place! I felt like the biblical Jonas, who apparently was in Wales too ( or was that whales?).

As for the chess itself, over 1000 took part. I'm glad I didn't play in the over 50s as it was won by a certain GM John Nunn and I didn't want to score "nunn"! Graeme scored 2.5/5 in the Soane's Weekender but jointly won the Under-1750 with a magnificent 4/5! So it wasn't a "grim" time for Graeme!

Last year, I was unbeaten in 10 games in Bournemouth, finishing second and third in two under 1600 events. This gave me a ECF grading of 119 or 1593 ELO ( compared to my current UCU rating of 1301!). This time, I again entered two similar events, the Yates Weekender and the midweek Under-1600. I played 5 Englishmen, 2 Scots, a Welsh, a Ukrainian and an Indian. I played three openings twice-the Vienna, the French Advanced and the Scotch. Could I extend my unbeaten run at the British to 20? Let's see!

Game 1 in the Yates against Scots Mark Smith was an exciting, sacrificial Vienna (1.e4 e5; 2.Nc3 Nf6; 3.f4 d5; 4.fxe5 Nxe4; 5.d3 Qh4 ch) but we both only got half a "mark"! Next I was Black against Welsh man Paul Taylor- "suited" me against his Scotch Game- another early draw! A longer game ensued against Ukrainian Steve Szwajkin but it was another draw. At least he laughed when I told him my only Ukrainian joke: "Me Tarzan; Ukraine"! Next, my English opponent John Hodges "hedges" his bets and "dodges" defeat against my Slav and draws in 15 moves!   The final Yates game against Englishman Nathan Weesing saw a clear advantage for my French Advanced where I drew in 14 moves, afraid of scoring "nathan"!

Next was the midweek Under 1600. My first, facing a Sicilian defence against England's Andrew Hughes was not a "Hughes" game in terms of length- another draw. In fact, seven of my ten games were under 22 moves and my two wins were 69 and 48 moves respectively- is there a moral here somewhere? Has my get up and go got up and gone? You decide!

My next two games were wins putting me into second place! I gave the "bird" to my opponent's Bird's Opening - was he an Englishman or a "Scot"- both as he was Scott Hammett! See our game below. My third game against real Scot- not so "handy Andy" McCullogh- saw me win a French Adanced where my opponent played the same Nf5? move played by Weesing above! My fourth game against Indian Ananthe Anulkuna was a short Scotch Game draw after which I went to the local "Delhi" for something to eat! My final draw with my favourite Vienna against Englishman Steve Ashworth resembled my last game in the Yates in that I took an early draw in a favourable position, thereby missing second place. I still wonder was "Ash worth" a draw but he did "ash" me nicely for a draw! Overall, a lovely holiday and 20 unbeaten games!

While in Llandudno, an English friend of mine, James Prattle, kindly pointed out he had spotted one of my games published in a chess book alongside such illustrious players as Lasker,  J. Blackburne ( not Tony!), Capablanca and even Ruy Lopez, whose King's Gambit game against Cutri at Madrid in 1575 (!) starts off the same as mine, which is given in full as a subvariation- in full because it only lasts 7 moves!! Maybe that is why my game appears in Graham Burgess' "The Quickest Chess Victories of All Time" (Cadogan, 1998). Here is the game with annotations by the author;

The opening ceremony saw a number of short speeches from the sports minister, the Director of the school and several key members of staff. Mikhail and Brendan spoke of their excitement at the first ever match between Belfast and Saint Petersburg and how the city itself is one of the most beautiful places in the world. They also highlighted the importance of the international friendships that can develop and their shared vision for continued strong links into the future. Hopefully Belfast will be able to find a way to host a group of players from Saint Petersburg in 2018.

The match was split into four classical rounds of chess, one per morning from Sunday to Wednesday. The afternoons were dedicated to other chess activities, ranging from a GM Simul, a rapidplay tournament and a blitz. The match was played at two locations, the first at the chess school, the second at a chess summer camp in the forest of Roshchino village on the outskirts of the city.

On top of the chess programming, Mikhail and Brendan also arranged visits for Team Belfast to become immersed in the cultural life of the city. Highlights included trips to the opulent Winter Palace/Hermitage Museum, a breath-taking a cappela concert at the Philharmonic Hall, a tour of the Shermetev Palace/Museum of Music, a canal cruise and a Europa League football match which saw Zenit Saint Petersburg win 2-0 against FC Utrecht from The Netherlands.

Sunday 20 August 2017:

Round 1 saw an award-winning performance by Board 1 Mikhail Pavlov (1795) who defeated Dmitry Fraiman (2307) in just 21 moves following an intelligent combination of sacrificial chess. Other notable wins came from Ross Harris (1682) over Sergey Lyazhkov (1844), Daniil Zelenchuk (1514) defeated Sergey Senin (1345) and Adrian Dornford-Smith claimed victory over Alina Kapustina (1117). Meanwhile, Mark Newman (1679) drew with Andrey Novitsky (1544) and Dmitry Zelenchuk (1391) picked up half a point against Anastasia Vershinina (1476). After an extremely close opening round, congratulations were offered to the super strong Russian team who secured 6 wins bringing their total to 7 points in round 1, leaving Team Belfast with 5 points after the first day.

The afternoon was devoted to a 17 player simultaneous with WGM Dina Belenkaya (2334). She was allocated 80 minutes on the clock to each participant’s 40 minutes. Team Belfast delivered some excellent results which included wins by Barney McGahan (1090) and Daniil Zelenchuk (1514), draws by Dexter Harris (907) and Brendan Jamison (1747) and the last man standing award went to Ross Harris (1682) for an impressive one-on-one GM battle at the end! The final score saw Dina scoop a spectacular 14 points, with Team Belfast walking away with 3 points!

Monday 21 August 2017:

The mini-bus collected the team on Monday morning and travelled 90 minutes North West of the city to a forest summer camp beside the village of Roshchino. Round 2 introduced a 90 year old FIDE Master onto Board 1, FM Alexsandr Rutman (2038) who has only dropped a few hundred rating points from his peak FIDE rating in the 2400s! This inspirational legend proved too sharp to defeat and sadly Mikhail was unable to defend his ferocious attacks. However, other members of Team Belfast managed to pick up points against their Saint Petersburg rivals. Ross Harris (1682) took his first win with Black against Dmitry Golovanskikh (1523), Mark Newman (1679) defeated Mikhail Solovyov (1392), Daniil Zelenchuk (1514) beat Dmitrii Zhivotovskii (1289) and two draws were picked up by John Bradley (1663) against Anzhelika Petrova (1463) and Edward Khanzharov (1413) against Artem Pakhomov (1233). In total, Team Belfast scooped 4 points, with Team Saint Petersburg walking away with 8 points from Round 2.

The afternoon saw a fun 5 round swiss rapidplay tournament with each of the 38 players enjoying 15 minutes on the clock. Not surprisingly, FM Alexsandr Rutman (2038) won the summer camp championship with 4.5/5. However, joint second place was shared between 5 players, of whom two were from Belfast, Brendan Jamison (1747) and Daniil Zelenchuk (1414), both scoring 4/5. The tie-breaks left Brendan as the winner of the gold cup with his 3 wins and two draws.

Tuesday 22 August 2017:

Round 3 in the forest camp was the toughest yet for Team Belfast. Only father and son duo Daniil and Dmitry were able to secure wins and Ross, Mark and Adrian picked up draws. It was an emphatic victory for Team Saint Petersburg who scooped a total of 8.5/12. Thankfully the afternoon was gentler on the nerves as players raced to the playing room for a 9 round blitz tournament with 38 players. The event was won by Filip Rudovskii (1680) with 8/9 while Daniil Zelenchuk (1514) was awarded the second place cup for 7.5/9 and FM Alexsandr Rutman (2038) came third with 6.5/9. Other notable scores by Belfast players included Brendan Jamison (1747) and John Bradley (1663), both finishing on 6/9, just half a point behind the top 3.

Wednesday 23 August 2017:

Returning to the Kalininsky Chess School for round 4, team captain Brendan Jamison made small switches to the board order in a last ditch attempt to win the final round! Placing Mark Newman (1679) as White on Board 2 against Ilya Tarasov (2132), Jamison slipped to Board 4 to defeat Sergey Lyazhkov (1844), but on Board 3 Ross Harris (1682) had to endure the fearsome FM Alexsandr Rutman (2038). Meanwhile on Board 1, Dmitry Fraiman (2307) was determined to punish Mikhail Pavlov (1795) for defeating him in round 1! With such strength at top and bottom of the boards, Team Saint Petersburg looked completely unstoppable! But a hero emerged on Board 12 when 8 year old Adam Fitzsimons (798) defeated M. Andreev (===). Then on board 6, Daniil Zelenchuk (1514) beat Mikhail Ivanov (1439) to chalk up the perfect score of 4/4 in his classical games. John Bradley (1663) drew with Andrey Novitsky (1544) on board 5 and Dmitry Zelenchuk (1391) claimed a strong win over Anastasia Vershinina (1476). In the end, Team Belfast had improved their points since the day before, this time ending on 4.5/12. Congratulations to Saint Petersburg for winning the match with a total of 31 points to Belfast’s 17. Hopefully on the return leg, we can mount a stronger challenge when the Russians travel to Northern Ireland.

Tournament report by Brendan Jamison

SENIOR SECTION

The over 1700 senior section of this year’s Ulster Championships enjoyed a special international flavour with our favourite American competitors Steve Scannell (1983) and Stephen Rush (1844) joined by newcomers Nikhil Joshi (2103) from India and Sergio Pereira (2001) from Portugal. We also welcomed 3 exceptional young players from the Republic of Ireland, Jonathan Peoples (1757), Peter Carroll (1742) and Alex Goss (1714). Polish FIDE Master Karina Kruk WFM also entered the mix, as did Thomas Donaldson (1753), recently elected Chess Club President at Imperial College London.

The standard of chess in the top section was phenomenal and we received many positive messages from all the spectators watching the live boards at home. In Round 5, Thomas Donaldson (1753) delivered an outstanding victory over Nikhil Joshi (2103) to secure the best game prize on a live board. Our thanks to former UCU President David McAlister for donating this award, a special edition of the American Chess Magazine. Thomas also scooped the Under 1800 Grading Prize, finishing on 3.5/6. Last year’s Ulster Champion Stephen Rush (1844) remained undefeated in this year’s tournament as he won the 2^nd place prize, finishing with 4.5/6 with 3 wins and 3 draws.

With 5/6 points, the ever-charismatic Steve Scannell (1983) received a giant round of applause as he won the Ulster Championship for a 9^th time! Once again he has proven his status as a true chess legend and remains a great inspiration to the many students of the game!

INTERMEDIATE SECTION

The Intermediate section welcomed Heilke Gorter (1570), a visiting player from The Netherlands who joined 10 of our regular tournament goers. The under 1500 Grading prize was tightly fought out but in the end William Storey (1343) was the deserved winner with 3.5/6. Meanwhile in second place, Chris Kelly (1560) delivered 5 excellent wins. However, one player rose above all others, the championship was awarded to the phenomenal Modestas Razbadauskas (1510) from Lithuania. His performance rating (TPR) of 2249 bodes well for his UCU rating to begin catching up with his true strength as a top class competitor.

JUNIOR SECTION

With 29 players, of whom 12 were competing in their first ever Ulster Championships, the Junior section created a wonderful buzz in the playing venue. We were delighted to enjoy so much fresh energy from so many younger players who contributed lots of imagination and creativity to their games. New teenage player Louie McConkey scooped the Unrated grading prize with 3/6. Jasper Ramsey (877) punched far above his grading band with a TPR of 1190 and finished on 3.5/6 to secure the Under 1000 prize. Meanwhile fellow QUB sensation Rian Mellotte (1103) delivered another excellent tournament performance with 4.5/6 to win the Under 1150 prize. 4 players tied on 4.5/6 so the tie-break system of Median Buchholz awarded Martin Kelly (1301) 3^rd place and Chris Armstrong (1398) 2^nd place, both remaining undefeated throughout the 6 rounds. Paddy Magee (1241) also ended on 4.5/6, but just missed out on a prize by a whisker. However, his play had been of a very high standard throughout the weekend, clocking up 4 impressive wins and a draw.

This section saw one player dominate the first 4 rounds with the perfect score of 4/4. In the final two rounds, he remained unbeaten as he settled for draws to secure the Ulster Junior Championship, congratulations to Cathan Gormley (1220). We look forward to seeing his chess continue to develop in the league season ahead and of course he automatically shoots up into the Intermediate section in next year’s Ulster Championships. He promises to be player to watch!

THANK YOU

Competitors delivered a round of applause at the end of the prize-giving for arbiters Ross Harris, Brendan Jamison and Adrian Dornford-Smith who volunteered 3 days to set-up and run the tournament, as well as many weeks of planning. The Europa Hotel also received a big thank you for donating the room for free which meant we were able to use the entire amount collected in entry fees (£835) for distribution as prize money and simul tickets.

All 5 grading prizes included cash and a £25 ticket to the upcoming GM Simul in Belfast on the evening of Thursday 22 February 2018. This is a yearly highlight in the local chess calendar and it always takes place the night before everyone heads to the Bunratty International Chess Festival.

As part of this wonderful event  Ulster Chess is assisting in running a Cafe Chess event at Caffe Nero , 19 Lombard St.

We will have people playing chess. Some brilliant chess puzzles to solve. The aim is to encourage passers-by to experience the fun of chess and hopefully have a quick game.

A Caffe Nero table is waiting for a Chess game.....waiting for you!

In recognition of Ray's outstanding contribution to Ulster Chess , Belfast South Chess Club organised a presentation for him at The Bankers Club. The presentation took place on the penultimate evening of the Eglantine Summer Tournament in which has Ray has been a participant.

Ray is hoping to continue his love of chess by joining one of the clubs in Newcastle and we wish him and his family the very best for the future.

The results of the tournament:

Dmitry Zelenchuk follows in his sons footsteps and without the need to play in the last couple of weeks due to having played 14 games is unreachable with a clear overall winning percentage of 85.7% - and unbeaten - a brilliant result.

Dmitry is followed closely by Stephen Rush who is second overall with 80%.

With Stephen being second overall the winner of the top section is Nicholas Pilkiewicz on 75%.

With Dmitry being overall Winner, the winner of the middle section is Daniil Zelenchuk on 62.5%

The Winner of the lower section is Barney McGahan on an excellent 71.4%. New comer to the tournament Ranjit Singh got a commendable 60% and came second in this section.
