Muldoons 1 teach students a lesson as Division 1 lead grows

(B&D League 2016/17 Week 17) Reigning champions Muldoons 1 extended their lead with a convincing win over QUB 1.

Division 1

  • Ballynafeigh 1 4-1 Ballynafeigh 2
  • QUB 1 0.5-4.5 Muldoons 1

Muldoons 1 easily brushed aside QUB 1 as the Corporation Square outfit remained on course to successfully defend their Silver King. Gareth Annesley, Nicholas Pilkiewicz, Danny Mallaghan and Stephen Wood all won their games, with only Stephen Morgan being held to a draw by Callum Ormerod. With Ballynafeigh 1 beating Ballynafeigh 2 by a score of 4-1, this means that Muldoons 1's lead grows by half a point.

Division 2

  • Muldoons 2 1.5-3.5 Ballynafeigh 3
  • Fruithill 3-2 Civil Service
  • Ballynafeigh 4 2.5-2.5 Bangor Webbs
  • Kelly's Heroes 3.5-1.5 QUB 2

Ballynafeigh 3 recovered nicely from last week's slip-up against Civil Service to beat Muldoons 2 and go 12.5 points clear at the top of Division 2. Ross Harris, Dmitry Zelenchuk and Colin Fenton all won for the visitors, while Muldoons 2's only win came from John Wood against Daniil Zelenchuk. Despite being a 218-point underdog on paper, the younger Zelenchuk's defeat must have felt like an upset, given his blistering recent form. Not only that, but second-placed QUB 2 squandered their opportunity to stay on their tail as they lost 3.5-1.5 to Kelly's Heroes. John McKenna and Richard Gould won for the Malone Road side, while the other three games were drawn. Fruithill narrowly beat Civil Service, while the upset of the week award goes to James Barbour (1074) as he beat Michael Sheerin (1374) to help Ballynafeigh 4 draw with the Bangor Webbs.

Division 3

  • Ballynafeigh 5 0-5 Ballynafeigh 6
  • QUB 3 4-1 QUB 4

With the title already decided, attention now turns to who will be saddled with the wooden spoon. It could very well go to Ballynafeigh 5 after they were surprisingly whitewashed by Ballynafeigh 6, who take second place as QUB 3 defeated QUB 4 4-1.
