Coffee-house men too hot to handle

(B&D Leagues 2014/15 Week 9) For the first time in a long time, Lindores 1 look like a threat in the title race after a whitewash of Belfast South 1. Their second team were also victorious, narrowing the gap at the top of Division 2.

Division 1

Belfast South 1 0-5 Lindores 1

In the only Division 1 fixture to go ahead this week, Lindores 1 (Horvath/Leitch/Harris/MacDonald/Moore) moved into second place by whitewashing Belfast South 1 (Devenney/Flanagan/MacLean/Bryars/W. Storey). Bryars came close to saving the home side's blushes when his MacDonald found himself in serious time trouble, but MacDonald played accurately to seal the win.

Division 2

Mudoons 2 4.5-0.5 Ballynafeigh 4

Muldoons 2 comfortably come out on top against Ballynafeigh 4. After his excellent win against Eoin Carey last week, Owen McEvoy continued his good form with a draw against Rodney Orr, but the home side dominated the other boards, with debutant Ben McBride defeating Norman Rainey.

Ballynafeigh 5 0-5 Ballynafeigh 3

Ballynafeigh 3 (Rush/R. Lavery/Carey/Winter/Barbour) consigned Ballynafeigh 5 (B. Jackson/Anderson/Weir/Charles) to a fourth consecutive whitewash defeat. Ballynafeigh 5 got off to the worst possible start when Weir allowed Carey to mate him in just six moves, and it wasn't much longer before the match was wrapped up.

QUB 1.5-3.5 Lindores 2

Lindores 2 narrowed the gap to Belfast South 2 with this win over QUB, in which Paul McNaughton, Ian Kilpatrick and Andy Hughes picked up victories. The students' 1.5 points were hard-earned though, as Chris Roe (1186) held Jim McLean (1601) to a draw and Chris Cao (1089) defeated David Barr (1315).

NI Civil Service 2-3 Belfast South 2

"Kelly's Heroes" recorded a narrow win over NICS, thanks in no small part to Neil Green's (1423) excellent performance against the highest-rated player in the division, Peter May (1789), scoring a quick win with the black pieces. David Jackson equalised against Bernard Jaffa, but Cathal Murphy and Martin Kelly won their games to secure the match for the visitors before Mark Newman defeated David Ruben.
