Only 7 weeks left

The Summer Tournament is into the home straight with only 7 weeks left to go. Over the past 11 weeks there has been some fine, competitive chess and plenty of upsets and turnarounds with plenty more to come no doubt.

The Summer tournament hasn't missed a week since it started in 21st May. Players meet at 7:30pm and a draw is made, matching if possible strengths and sharing colours. The controller always ensures there's an odd no. This year the bands are above 1500, above 1200. We have some 36 players having played 116 games.

Special thanks to Neil Green for controlling the tournament last week when I was on holidays. This year we aim to have an uninterrupted 18 weeks of chess. With the 19th week being a quick play tournament and prize giving - the last weds in September. We have 7 weeks left for players to get there 10 games to qualify for a position in the tournament.

With plenty of brilliant chess and some upsets. Chris Armstrong with a strong 55% has played up a few games and done well, beating and drawing with David Ruben. The intermediate section is too close to call with Neil Green being chased by Pat McKillen and a bevy of challengers not to mention Mathew Chapman who, if he can reach the minimum game count, could just sneak in and claim the section.

In all sections we have players competing excellently. The lower section looks like a fight between David Seaby who is leading the section and Adrian Dornford-Smith. But there are a few challengers not far behind; plenty of room for the lead to change.

Overall Gareth Annesley looks on track to win (if he completes the necessary 10 games) with an unbeaten record only dropping .5 to John Masterson. John is using the tournament to get practice for the Ulster Seniors this month and also hasn't lost a game but did provide a surprise draw against Ian Woodfield. Ian is in that difficult position where he gets paired with the top players and no easy matches; despite this Ian has scored a very respectable 50%. John Bryars started with some brilliant results soundly beating Mark Newman and winning against Ian Woodfield but has since fallen back with three loses in a row - however, the results don't always reflect the games which can be very close.

Mark Newman suprised everyone in week 11 by beating Nicholas Pilkiewicz playing the two knights as black, breaking through the centre and weakening Whites King. Putting it through Fritz shows some of what Mark thought were good moves as dubious! perhaps dubious but fun....play the game

The players to watch are Gareth Annesley, Matthew Chapman, Neil Green, Patrick McKillen, David Seaby and Adrain Dornford-Smith.

Follow the Current Standings: at the end of week 11, sections line up like this:

Summer School 2014. A new venue and lots of fun.

This year saw the Summer School at a new venue. The Ballynafeigh Bowling Club - Ormeau Park. A beautiful setting for some fun chess. We had 14 youngsters playing endgames, solving problems and playing in a competition.

The focus of this years school was endgames. From opposition to minor pieces to Queen against a pawn.

The activities for the three days of concentrated chess fun included. Solving problems in teams. Playing an individual tournament. Scoring and analysing a chess game played with a partner (we paired more experienced players with beginners to faciliate coaching between students). Gareth Annesley setup problems and coached their solutions. We played through a brilliant Capablanca Ending. A complete game showing the development of a middle game plan. Battle-Chess with Kings and 4 Pawns, excellent practice for endgame play. Battleships with a chess board, which lets the player learn/visualize the board.

One of the team games: Pheobe and Michael v Eoin and Calvin

The students ended the three days with medals for the competition and folders containing chess problems, endgames, an example analysed game and certificates recording their attendance at the event.

At lunch times players could play new games they might not have played before - Manacala, Game of Urh, Othello, Mastermind......

Thanks to the Bowling Club and the local council for allowing us to use such an excellent venue.

Thanks to Geoff Hindley, Gareth Annesley and Matthew Chapman for coaching

Thanks to the students for being such enthusiastic chess players.

Ulster Championships Round Up

A round up of the 2014 Ulster Championships

The Europa Hotel was once again the scene of a fantastic Ulster Championships over the August bank holiday weekend. With 58 players all chomping at the bit and a total prize fund of £1000 at stake, the atmosphere in the playing hall was electric. There was a great mixture of players present from total beginners to the top seed in the senior section with a FIDE rating of 2268. Thanks to the efforts of Mark Newman, working tirelessly with children's chess, and Damien Cunningham, who seems to produce an endless supply of new players from Ballynafeigh, the junior section was bulging at the seams with a massive 32 participants. The large number of entrants made for an exciting weekend of chess with many of the prizes going right down to the wire on the final day.

JUNIOR SECTION

The Junior competition proved to be the most closely contested section with 6 players in with a chance of the title going into the final round. Top seed Eoin Carey had a half point advantage over the rest of the field but was pitted against UCU Treasurer Adrian Dornford-Smith, who was positioned 2nd at the time.

Carey, who had proved himself a very tough competitor last year in the league, prevailed in the game and won the junior section with a score of 5.5 / 6. Two players to look out for in the future are 9 year old Teddy Onslow who finished 2nd and Bangor schoolboy Andrew Todd who finished 3rd. Teddy was the only player to take any points of winner Carey and Andrew had notable wins over seasoned players Cathal Murphy and John Monaghan. Other notable performances came from Stephen Cullen and David Barr who both scored 4 / 6 in their first competition.

1st Place Eoin Carey

2nd Place Teddy Onslow

3rd Place Andrew Todd

Grading Stephen Cullen

INTERMEDIATE SECTION

As always the intermediate section was a closely fought battle and this year the main protagonists were Niall Troughton and Norman McFarland. Troughton set the early pace winning his first 4 games while McFarland dropped points with a travelling bye and a draw against 11 year old Alfie Onslow, who scored an excellent 3 / 6 in his first Ulster Championships. McFarland beat Troughton in round 5 to draw level on points and setting up a tense finale. Both players won their final games and McFarland took the title on tie-break.

1st Place Norman McFarland

2nd Place Niall Troughton

3rd Place Ian Woodfield

Grading Bernard Jaffa

SENIOR SECTION

Gabor Horvath lived up to his pre-tournament status as favorite by winning the Ulster Seniors with an impressive score of 5.5 / 6. His only half point dropped came in the final round when he ran into some home preparation against Lindore's team mate Ross Harris. Horvath went for an early kingside attack in a lesser known variation of the Caro-Kann, however he left his king in the centre and Harris was able to create a dangerous attack by sacrificing the exchange. Horvath forced an early draw in a very complicated and double-edged position.

Going into the final round the fight for 2nd and 3rd place was really heating up with Stephen Scannell, James McDonnell and Nicholas Pilkiewicz battling it out for the two positions. Calum Leitch beat Pilkiewicz in a London System knocking him out of contention. That left Scannell and McDonnell to fight it out for the final two places and the match went right down to the wire. With both players short on time, in a complicated rook and pawn ending, the pressure was almost unbearable. A crowd of around 25 people watched on with bated breath and a draw was finally agreed which clinched Scannell 2nd place.

There were very commendable performances from Brendan Jamison who won the grading prize with 3.5 / 6 and Robert Lavery who scored 2 / 6 in his first Senior Championships when he was heavily out-rated by all his opponents.

With 3 weeks left players need to ensure they complete the 10 necessary games and also not to lose points by playing 2 of the last three games. Who is winning....

We are now entering the final stages of the Summer tournament. The rule of playing 2 out of the 3 weeks kicks in - this ensures players hoping to win can't stay away and hold on to a winning percentage.

One thing this year I have noticed is that we have had some excellent/challenging endgame positions. There was the game published earlier between Chris Armstrong and Neil Green. Then an exciting Bishop v Knight finish of Matthew Chapman v Cathal Murphy where Matthew was forced to stop Cathal's pawn with his bishop but had hoped to force a win against the Knight with a forward pawn. The end result a draw (game on the left below). Then there was Ian Woodfield against Peter McGuckin where Ian looked like he could attack Peters King but Peter found a beautiful square for his Queen threatening an unstoppable mate on the move and thereby forcing Ian to give constant check - a draw was agreed. I am going to study my endgames!

Chess fun and enthusiasm at Belfast Culture Night

Belfast Culture Night is a buzz of activity. Surrounded by this cultural warmth a set of chess tables waited for players. And they werent disappointed. Friends, family, people who love chess sat and played enjoying Cafe Chess.

The atmosphere of Belfast Culture Night buzzs with friendly faces and smiles. Balloons, painted faces, music of all types fills the air. We were lucky to be part of this wonderful event. Outside Caffe Nero 6 tables were arranged with chess sets for that best of games a social outside cafe game of chess. Chess players came and played. People walking by were heard to be discussing when they used to play chess. Play started at 4:00pm and went until it was dark and the cafe was closing and still people were playing. Youngsters dragged their parents over to play. Once the larger set was put on the ground spectators watched and the buzz of analysis of the position was almost auditable - "dont do that!", "I saw that"..... Karina Kruk played several interesting games on this set. Brendon Jamieson gave a lesson to some youngsters on how to play the game. Stephen McCann almost won some games! It turns out that there are quite a few good players out there. Pamphlets with 5 beautiful chess puzzles were handed-.out that included details of our website, and for those interested in competitive play a pamphlet with the dates of UCU competitions, Adult and Children. It was good to see faces from last years event and hopefully people will renew there interest in the game and lookup a local chess club.

Many thanks to all involved - in an event that makes you realise how brilliant people are....

Thanks to the Belfast Culture Night organisers.

Thanks to the Chess players who came to play.

Thanks to Culture Night visitors for joining us and playing.

Thanks to Caffe Nero for hosting us in such an excellent location.

I include a montage of photos - they capture a little of the atmosphere of the event, to capture it all you will have to attend next year!

Wednesday 24th September saw the Summer tournament Prize giving and an active play handicap. Where players are awarded more time depending on the difference of rating with their opponent. A fast and furious competition....who would win?

The evening started with the placing on the wall of round 1 pairings and a list of rating differences and a split time of 20mins between the two players ie rating difference 261-390 giving a time difference of 15mins to 5 mins. The following 6 rounds produced some upsets showing time can be an equaliser.

Round 1 saw Pat McKillen beating Gareth Annesley, David Seaby winning against Mark Newman, William Storey beating Stephen McCann, Roy Stafford beating David Ruben, Robert McDonald beating Robert Lavery. The giants of the tournament lay slain with one victor standing Nicholas Pilkiewicz.

After the quick play fun. Geoff Hindley UCU President handed-out the Certificates and prizes (including tickets to next years Simultaneous). The Summer tournament had been another success with plenty of chess, sacrifices, brilliant end-games and magnifient blunders and one or two slow draws. A fantastic way to spend a summer.....

Final Positions at the end of the 18 weeks of chess.

Childrens Chess Champion Crowned

On October 4th this years series of Childrens Chess tournaments started at Methodist College. We had battleChess, Chess Puzzles, informal coaching and plenty of chess games. A form1 pupil Peter Todd (Bangor Grammar) won the Secondary school section and P5 Pheobe Patterson (home educated) won the Primary section.....The gauntlet has been thrown who out there can beat these champions?

Its always nervous as an organiser starting off the season. You never know how many players will turnup. This year we had the help of teacher and chess enthusiast Gerry Tate from St Patricks Grammar School, Downpatrick who brought a mini bus with 9 chess players. We had a total of 19 players in the secondary school section and 6 in the Primary section rising to 9 with some late arrivals.

An afternoon of chess playing and problem solving. The primary section played an all play all of 5 rounds with 6 players. Play was at such a pace even with encouragement to slow down that the tournament completed within 2 hours. So we set a second challenge with 3 more players we setup an all-play-all 9 round competition of Battlechess. This game involves each player having 4 Pawns and a King. The players hide their half of the board from their opponent with a sheet of A3 and place their Pawns on any squares in rows 2 to 4 and the King on any square row 1 to 3 (if on 4 he might be in check and an illegal position may be created). Once both players acknowledge that their position is set the separator is removed and the full board displayed. Play then continues with normal rules, white moving first. The winner is the first to get a Pawn to Queen safely. A brilliant game that is fast but challenging giving players the opportunity to study endgame play showing their skills with the Kings. Skills are in positioning the pieces and then playing the endgame. When you start playing endgames can be quite rare.

The Secondary section was looked after by Gerry Tate and was run as a Swiss 7 round tournament. The result of this was exciting as you will see below in the results.

One thing that chess is, is a family game and families were brilliantly represented. We have the Pattersons providing 4 brilliant players including the 2 young players Phoebe and Calvin who are the two to beat in the Primary section. The Dawson brothers, John an excellent puzzle solver and Joel who won last years lower school Scholastic Shield. The 3 Todd brothers Peter, Samuel, Andrew all now playing in the secondary section, last year the youngest, Peter was in the primary section where he won every tournament he attended, winning the Primary School Scholastic Shield. How would he fair in the tough secondary section. Andrew recently played in the adult tournament The Ulster Championships where he won 3rd place is his section with 5 out of 6 points.

Now down to the competition results:

The Puzzle solving sheets are always full of challenging and beautiful problems to solve.
