Arthur Cootes Trophy given to new Ulster Rapidplay Champion

The Ulster Rapidplay Championship 2014 was played in Ballynafeigh Community Centre and a new Champion was awarded the Arthur Cootes Cup.

The later start for the Rapidplay saw twenty players gathering for the battle that is fast(ish) Chess. A time limit of 20 minutes with 5 seconds increment. You have to be quick and accurate in your analysis. A good mix of ratings and players' ages meant for an interesting battle. The competition also saw for sale books owned by our late friend Des Forson, the money from which is being donated to charity.

Round 1 saw Adrian Dornford-Smith (962) beat Nigel Telford (1500) and Chris Armstrong (1353) beat Peter McGuckin (1580). All other games went to rating.

board1

Defeating Calum Leitch and Ciaran is now a half point ahead of the field. Karina Kruk a very close second with 3.5 points having taken Mark Newman apart.

The swiss system sees Karina play Ciaran who wins and increases his lead to a full point. Closely followed by Calum Leitch and Niall Troughton both on 4 points.

In the final round Ciaran would have to lose if anyone hoped to catch him. He didn't and won the crown undefeated. Niall (1500) taking the scalp of Calum (1701).
