During the summer of 2005, a second series of Master Classes were presented by local top players.

Organised by Bangor Chess Club under the auspices of the UCU, the classes were held over 5 Saturdays during July & August in the Rudolf Steiner School in Holywood. The classes were open to all local players.

This year's sessions continued the format that appeared to work in the 2004 series:

A review of the previous session (usually presented by Mark Newman); designed to build thematically through the series.

A Question & Answer session with the presenter usually about the Master's chess career and local chess issues

Presentation: the 2005 series aimed to focus on pawn structures and management

Lunch

Afternoon: workshops, practice games and a mini-tournament or whatever worked for attendees

Reception

The quality of presentations in this second series was again very high and well received by attendees. However, numbers were very low even among Bangor members. Despite better preparation & organisation, it seemed like the UCU membership could not support the event. No further events were planned in this format.

A presentation by Ray Devenny, August 2005 in the UCU Master Class series

The session started with Ray being asked questions from the audience.

How did you start in chess?

I started late I was 16 years old and had no interest in chess. However some of my friends at Coleraine Inst wanted to setup a chess club. The headmaster Dr Humphries explained that they needed ten signatories to start a club. I signed up - the next thing was that they expected me to turn up! I turned up and caught the bug. We were all roughly the same level - no one good to teach us. Joined the local club at Coleraine - Mr McKane. Became the school champion and won the school v staff competition.

(learnt later from Ron Henderson that he had help start the Coleraine club - small world)

We missed out from having a strong player to coach us or to play against. Went onto Trinity College Dublin where shock, surprise I wasn't the strongest player.

What have been the most enjoyable moments in your chess career?

Winning the school championships. This was my first triumph. Psychologically it was good It was a prestigious thing to win and my first achievement. Next has to be winning the Irish Championships in 1977.

What do you put this great achievement down to?

Luck! The best players are consistent all the time. They train and 'indoctrinate'. Most players are good from time to time. I had my fair share of luck. My highest rating was 2,200 - possibly a little low for the Irish Champion. In 76, 78 I was expecting a result. Hadn't planned to play in the 77 Irish had played in a Belfast tournament and done abysmally. Arthur Pinkerton called and asked if I was going to Cork, If I was would I look after a couple of youngsters who wanted to play and needed a lift and looking after - two of these were David Houston and Keith Allen. So changed mind to help out. Set off in my car and came back loaded with trophies! Did I study - yes, independently on my own.

What is your favourite chess book?

My first book. Chess Traps, Pitfalls and Swindles by Fred Reinfeld. Not always the easiest to read but an enjoyable book. You learn more in one hour of play with a strong player than you do studying.

What are your views on the Ulster Chess Union and junior chess?

Good question. Worried with the general circumstances with the split from the Irish Chess Union. Chess not strong in Ulster. Teachers face difficulties from the pressures of work. You need the impetus to play chess and this in the past has come from enthusiastic chess teachers like Brian Thorpe. Teachers go for high profile sports - Rugby, football. You need a higher profile for chess. Publicity, sponsorship. TV and radio. Also intensive training sessions. The sad thing is that girls' chess in Ulster is non-existent.

We are looking at pawn structures.
Quote from the book - "believe the strength about a chess expert is their ability to recognize a pawn lever in a position" ( para-phrased). It is important what Kubek doesnt say. He doesnt mention opening repoitoires, end games or plan in the middle game but singles above these the recognition of pawn levers.

The Ulster Open was played over the weekend of 15-16 October at the Belfast Boat Club.

The Ulster Open was last held in the year 2000. For 2005 the UCU
Committee decided to revive the competition and incorporate within in
it the Ulster Intermediate and Junior Champioships. The event was run
in a single section but with separate prize lists for the three
different categories of player.

A total of 20 players
entered, a rather disappointing number, particularly when the
prize-fund was larger than in most UCU weekenders. Still the players
who turned up weren't complaining about that.

In the absence of Steve Scannell, competing in a big tournament
in his native USA, the favourite for the Open was Tom Clarke, and
indeed he dominated the event, securing the title with a round to spare
with 5 straight wins. Equal second were Michael Waters and David
O'Donnell, the latter retaining his Ulster Intermediate title. Veteran
Alan Burns and Methodist College schoolboy Luke McMullen shared the
honours in the Junior Championship.
Fisherwick’s Michael Waters secured the runner-up spot after a tiebreak win over Frank Wu of Methodist College. However, the schoolboy still had the consolation of a grading prize for his strong performance. The other grading prizes were won by an unbeaten Damien Lavery and Drew Ferguson of the QUB Chess Club.

The 2006 winners in the three Divisions of the UCU Belfast and District Leagues are Clifton House, Malone and Armagh.

The 2005-2006 UCU Belfast & District League season is
finally over. There was a match involving the Division 2 teams
Groomsport and Malone that had been left over after the official end of
the season. The match had been originally postponed and then a dispute
arose as to the date of the re-arranged fixture. Unfortunately no free
dates were available before the end of the season but the UCU
Committee, deciding there had been a misunderstanding between the two
clubs, asked both clubs to play the match as soon as possible, because
the outcome of the Division 2 title-race depended upon the result.

The match was played on 11th May 2006 in Groomsport and Malone,
starting off 4 points behind Bombardier, gained 3 game points, plus 2
points for a match victory, to take the 2006 Division 2 title.

In Division 1 Clifton House retained their title. They were
reinforced this season by Nicholas Pilkiewicz and got off to their
usual fast start. Fisherwick, the 2004 champions, by contrast were
slowly into their stride but by mid-season were putting pressure on
last year's winners. However Clifton House pulled away again in the
final straight.

This season there were enough teams to have a full-scale
Division 3 for the first time since the 1998-1999 season. There was a
neck and neck race between Randalstown and Armagh, with overall victory
finally going to the latter. This was the first time since the early
1990s that an Armagh team had played in the Belfast & District
Leagues. Last season a number of Armagh players competed for the
Portadown team and this year the clubs amalgamated, meeting at a new
venue to both, the Armagh City Hotel.

This year's Ulster Championship battle was on the May Day Bank Holiday weekend. Saturday morning in Belfast Boatclub and the brave sixteen sat down to do battle for the title of Ulster Champion. Three days later - with a few upsets along the way - it was decided. Damien Lavery reports on the 2006 Ulster Senior Championship.

The second instalment of the Summer Ulster Championship was again held in the peaceful surroundings of Belfast Boat Club. Three days entertainment, or blood sweat and tears, lay in wait for the competitors. For the first time in recent memory, and probably prompted by last year's appalling turn-out, the championship was declared open to all. Concerns were murmured about lack of quality and easy pairings. Only time would tell if this would be an issue.

The usual faces were to be seen lurking around the top of the entry list. The three outstanding favourites for the title, Messrs Clarke, Scannell and Waters, were no doubt eyeing each other's repertoires for their likely rounds 3,4 and 5 meetings, which surely would prove critical in the outcome of the final standings. Others seemed just happy to put in a good showing, which in the case of your author, with a disastrous 0/6 showing last year, was at the forefront of his thoughts.

Round 1

Round one began punctually on Saturday morning. The schedule of two rounds per day for three days would provide ample time for both playing the games and relaxing in between, a rare luxury for those of us used to cramming three games per day in the usual weekender. There were no shocks in the early stages. The top boards, with their mismatched ratings, produced the expected results, if not in straightforward manner. Chris Kelly achieved a good, equal position against Tom Clarke on board one before going astray. Damien Cunningham, perhaps accepting his fate from move one, decided on a novel two pieces for four pawns sacrifice as black against Steve Scannell. If it had worked we would have been talking about it for years. Since we aren't talking about it, you will know the result.

Approaching the time control, suddenly the wisdom of allowing lower rated players into the competition was plain to see. Geoff Hindley, giving away nearly 500 rating points against Calum Leitch, was a full Rook up against his younger opponent. However, as nerves began to make their effect, Geoff first gave away his Rook, then any sort of advantage, and lastly the game. Next door on board five, David O'Donnell was making a small edge with White work as best he could against William Storey, however Black held a passed pawn in restraint remarkably well, and a draw was agreed. On board four, an unrecognisable Mark Newman went down badly with Black against Alex Beckett, winning the exchange but then proceeding to allow White the sort of attack we usually only dream about.

Round 2

1 Tom Clarke [1] 1:0 John Nicholson [1]
2 Calum Leitch [1] .5:.5 Stephen P. Scannell [1]
3 Michael Waters [1] 0:1 Damien Lavery [1]
4 William Storey [.5] 0:1 Alexander Beckett [1]
5 Mark Newman [0] 1:0 David O'Donnell [.5]
6 Dennis Wilkinson [0] 0:1 Christopher Kelly [0]
7 Damien Cunningham [0] 1:0 Geoff Hindley [0]
8 John Monaghan [0] 0:1 John Lynch [0]

Round two threatened to produce upsets, and it most certainly did. Tom Clarke once against won from an even/worse position as White against John Nicholson. Everyone needs to ride their luck, and Clarke was making the most of his two fortuitous wins. Steve Scannell found himself an exchange down against Calum Leitch as Black, but with a passed pawn and well-centralised King managed to steer the game to a draw.

Waters-Lavery was the upset of the round. It was a tense but very well contested game right up until the time control. A misjudged tactic from White allowed Black to make significant material gains and shortly after, finish the game off. At this early stage, any dropped points made an overall win unlikely. Mark Newman bounced back from round one disappointment, dispatching David O'Donnell efficiently. Other major news was that Alex Beckett could expect a top board calling after crushing William Storey to move on to a maximum two from two.

Round 3

1 Alexander Beckett [2] 0:1 Tom Clarke [2]

4 John Nicholson [1] 1:0 Damien Cunningham [1]
5 Christopher Kelly [1] .5:.5 Mark Newman [1]
6 John Lynch [1] 1:0 William Storey [.5]
7 Geoff Hindley [0] .5:.5 Dennis Wilkinson [0]
8 John Monaghan [0] 1:0 BYE
9 David O'Donnell [.5] .5:.5 BYE

A quick draw at the beginning of round three was the first sign of jostling for position. Lavery and Leitch didn't trouble the ink in their pens too much, shaking hands after ten moves.

In a battle of the heavyweights, Waters made his Black count against Scannell. A Budapest Gambit was the chosen battleground, and after trading down to a won double Rook and pawn endgame, Waters reasserted himself in the overall standings. It was going to be a tough road back for four-time winner Scannell. Tom Clarke reminded Alex Beckett of his proper standing in the tournament pecking order in crushing style, while John Nicholson moved quietly back into contention with a smooth victory over Damien Cunningham, including a cute promotion tactic worth looking at.

Peace broke out during Newman-Kelly and Wilkinson-Hindley also ended in a draw to ensure that, for this year at least, no one is left propping up the cross table on zero.

Round 4

1 Tom Clarke [3] .5:.5 Damien Lavery [2.5]
2 Michael Waters [2] 1:0 Alexander Beckett [2]
3 Calum Leitch [2] 1:0 John Lynch [2]
4 Christopher Kelly [1.5] 0:1 John Nicholson [2]
5 Mark Newman [1.5] 0:1 Stephen P. Scannell [1.5]
6 David O'Donnell [1] 1:0 John Monaghan [1]
7 Damien Cunningham [1] 1:0 Dennis Wilkinson [.5]
8 William Storey [.5] 1:0 Geoff Hindley [.5]

Clarke dropped his perfect score as White against Lavery in a tactic-fest, and was probably lucky that his peaceful-minded opponent didn't ask him to prove the worth of his speculative attack. Lavery afterwards confessed to copying an unusual opening idea that Mark Heidenfeld used to good effect against Clarke way back in 1999 at Kilkenny. Waters-Beckett was a Falkbeer Counter in a King's Gambit that went to an endgame with an facile win for White. Scannell kept himself in the hunt with a clinical win against Newman's trademark KIA, and Nicholson quietly moved into contention with a win over Chris Kelly. Elsewhere, O'Donnell made very heavy work of pushing over Monaghan from a very advantageous position.

Round 5

1 Michael Waters [3] .5:.5 Tom Clarke [3.5]
2 John Nicholson [3] 1:0 Calum Leitch [3]
3 Damien Lavery [3] 0:1 Stephen P. Scannell [2.5]
4 John Lynch [2] 0:1 David O'Donnell [2]
5 Alexander Beckett [2] 0:1 Damien Cunningham [2]
6 William Storey [1.5] 0:1 Mark Newman [1.5]
7 Geoff Hindley [.5] 0:1 Christopher Kelly [1.5]
8 Dennis Wilkinson [.5] 0:1 John Monaghan [1]

Round five was critical is setting up who was to battle it out for the Championship. Clarke defended his lead against Waters, the game ending in a draw. For a long time it seemed that White held a significant advantage, but any pull soon evaporated and the correct result ensued.

Lavery-Scannell could have had any of the three results at any one point. With Black desperate for the win to haul himself back into contention, he took considerable risks to unbalance a sterile position. First a draw, then a White win seemed likely. Then a horrible blunder handed Scannell the full point and a chance of an amazing comeback. John Nicholson won again, rather easily against Calum Leitch to move into the joint lead. With one round to go, he was a win away from adding to an impressive four championships gained in the 1970s. The rest of the field were working hard to achieve a good finish and final position, with some early casualties, notably O'Donnell and Newman, making a strong showing in the latter stages.

Round 6

In the final round, Nicholson-Waters turned out to be rather one sided. After a speculative attack, White was soon beaten back, and penetration by Black's Queen and Rooks spelt early trouble. Resignation soon followed.

With Waters in the box seat with 4.5, it was a nervous wait to see if the only game which mattered for the title ended in a result which allowed Waters to tie for first, or see him denied his debut Championship. For a long while, it seemed that Scannell-Clarke would be a slow crush by White. Chancy play by Clarke, who always plays for the win, had allowed Scannell to build up an impressive Kingside. Only a passed c-pawn merited any plus points in Black's position. As time ticked by, more on White's side than on Black's it has to be said, the game gradually wore down to a won, but by no means easy, Queen and pawn endgame for White.

However, time was a factor, and as they got closer to the end, it was soon Clarke's six minutes against Scannell's 1 minute 40. With the scoresheets tucked away, checks flashed across the board. When it seemed that a draw was most likely, an amazing double blunder had everyone holding their breath. Firstly, a skewer of White's King and Queen forced White to give way. However, instead of moving the King to protect the Queen, White went to protect his precious passed pawn. With the White Queen suddenly unprotected and hanging, a collective, and very audible gasp was emoted. But that was nothing compared to the reaction to Clarke's chess blindness when he refused the free Queen, and with it the outright Championship. Instead, another check followed, White lived to fight another day, and indeed a few moves later forced queens from the board and won the game. Waters and Scannell were tied for first with 4.5.

In other news, strong finishes from O'Donnell and Leitch allowed a good showing on the final standings, although the average rating of opponents meant that O'Donnell lost rating points. Contrary to this, Lavery, who finished a full point below on 3, after losing to O'Donnell in the final round, gained a considerable number of rating points, thanks to strong showings against the higher rated players; such is the way of open tournaments.

Final standings

It can be agreed that the tournament, from the neutral's point of view, was a great success. The allowing in of lower rated players did not diminish the competition in any way. Not only did they produce fighting chess throughout, but in one or two spectacular cases, the results matched the fighting qualities and not the rating predictions.

As for the winners, they showed two facets of life in general; those that attack and go for the win usually get rewarded with their just desserts, and luck generally favours the brave.

The 2005 Ulster Schools Individual Championship took place at RBAI on Saturday, November 19th 2005. Once again a very exciting tournament and thanks must go to Mr Chris Maitland (RBAI), Dr Graham Murphy (MCB), Mr Damian Walls (St Columbs), Mr David McAlister (UCU) and Dr Gopalan Srinivasan (UCU) for their roles in organising this event.

Under 19 Section

This Section consisted of ten players from five schools, including the captains of RBAI and MCB's first teams. The section lived up to the reputation gained in previous years by producing some very close games, ensuring none of the players ended up winless after five rounds.

David Grzymek, of Sullivan Upper school and first seed, lived up to his bill as pre tournament favourite by claiming the under 19 cup convincingly with five wins from his five games. David's Sullivan team mate Robin Brown also put in an impressive showing by winning four of his five games and coming a clear second place. Four players finished level on 2.5 points in third place but the prize was won for the second year in a row by RBAI's captain Ryan Murray.

Richard Montgomery of Sullivan upper was placed second for the second year in succession, and Ananda Srinivasan of Methody built upon his under 14 success of the previous year by coming third.
2005 Irish Schools Interprovincials

Ulster Schools hosted the All Ireland Under 19 and Under 16 Interprovincial Tournament on the weekend of 4/5 March 2005. The team competition was held at Methodist College, Belfast with visiting teams from Leinster and Munster.

Unfortunately, despite another noticeable improvement in the results and performances of the increasingly strong Ulster U19 and U16 teams from the previous year, both teams narrowly finished last in their section.

The Under 19s finished on 7.5/18, behind Leinster with 9.5/18 and Munster with 10/18. The Under 16s finished on 8.5/18 behind Leinster on 9.5/18 in a section consisting of just two provinces.

Under 19 Section

The Ulster panel, which employed a rotation system to fill the six boards, consisted of the following eight players:

David Gryzmek (1774) Sullivan,
Calum Leitch (1687) Campbell,
Shane Keers (1634) Sullivan,
Chris Millar (1566) (captain) MCB,
Philip Todd (1523) Bangor,
Ryan Murray (1505) MCB,
David Symington (1404) RBAI,
William Stewart (U/g) RBAI

Round 1

Shane Keers (1634) 0 - 1 Kevin O'Flagherty (M) (1530)
Graham Neary (1568) (L) 0 - 1 David Gryzmek (1774)
Chris Millar (1566) 0.5 - 0.5	Robbie Lunn (L) (1657)
James Vaughan (M) (1468) 0.5 - 0.5	Calum Leitch (1687)
David Symington (1404) 0 - 1 Emily Alfred (M) (1334)
William Stewart (U/g) 0 - 1 Rory Delaney (L) (1571)

Munster = 5

Leinster = 2

Ulster = 2

The first round results were a little disappointing for the Ulster team - in part due to some unfortunate and unexpected dropped points against what already appeared to be a significantly underrated Munster team. However, as the Ulster and Leinster teams appeared the strongest on paper and with two rounds still remaining, all hope of a rare interprovincial Ulster success was not lost.

David Symington's loss on time was paricularly unlucky - he saw his flag fall just two moves away from checkmating his Munster opponent. A reverse in this result alone would have left Ulster just a point behind the leaders and a point clear of champions and favourites Leinster. Meanwhile Shane Keers and William Stewart lost close games against tough oppostion while Chris Millar could only draw despite an advantage against 1657 rated Robbie Lunn due to imminent time pressure. David Gryzmek recovered from a difficult position against Leinster's Graham Neary to secure a valuable Ulster point while Calum Leitch's hard fought game ended in a draw as both players ran extremely short of time.

Round 2

Graham Neary (L) (1568) 0.5 - 0.5	Shane Keers (1634)
David Gryzmek (1774) 1 - 0 John Perrott (M) (1415)
Paul O'Flagherty (M) (1393) 0.5 - 0.5	Chris Millar (1566)
Calum Leitch (1687) 1 - 0 Robbie Lunn (L) (1657)
Rory Delaney (L) (1571) 1 - 0 Ryan Murray (1505)
Philip Todd (1523) 0 - 1 Paudie Humphreys (M) (1184)

Munster 5+3 = 8

Leinster 2+3 = 5

Ulster 2+3 = 5

The second round saw the installment of Ryan Murray and Philip Todd on to the bottom two Ulster boards. Unfortunately, however, this didn't produce a dramatic change in Ulster fortunes. Philip Todd, largely as a result of the unfamiliarity of the schools competition atmosphere, quickly lost against a weaker opponent - exactly the same happened to Richard Morrow on his Ulster debut last year. Calum Leitch secured his first win of the tournament with a victory over the Leinster team's highest rated player and David Gryzmek enjoyed an impressively comfortable win over the Munster second board. Shane Keers also got off the mark with a commendable draw as black. Chris Millar's game ended in some controversy as a result of perfectly honest, but perhaps slightly unusual, arbiter interference which may be the subject of an ICU appeal. Had the game resulted in an Ulster win, the team would have been just two rather than three points behind leaders Munster.

Round 3

John McMorrow (L) (1641)	1 - 0 Shane Keers (1634)
David Gryzmek (1774) 1 - 0 Kevin O'Flagherty (M) (1530)
James Vaughan (M) (1468) 1 - 0 David Symington (1404)
Calum Leitch (1687) 0.5 - 0.5	Phil Hogarty (L) (1408)
Darren McCabe (L) (1542)	1 - 0 Ryan Murray (1505)
Philip Todd (1523) 1 - 0 Emily Alfred (M) (1334)

Leinster = 4.5

Ulster = 2.5

Munster = 2

After Chris Millar's second round match, he stepped aside to allow David Symington to return to the team while Ryan Murray and Philip Todd continued on boards five and six.

Despite David Gryzmek's third win from three games and a fine attacking Morra Gambit victory for Philip Todd, the planned final round Ulster comeback didn't quite materalise. David Symington was again unlucky to lose, this time being checkmated after achieveing a drawn endgame. Ryan Murray lost another well-contested game against the Leinster captain, Darren McCabe, while Calum Leitch had to settle for a draw against 1408 rated Phil Hogarty.

Final Standings

Munster = 10

Leinster = 9.5

Ulster = 7.5

Under 16 section

Leinster 9.5/18

Ulster 8.5/18

As the final standings indicate, the under sixteen teams were also extremely well-matched. The scores of each Ulster player were:

1. Frank Wu (U/g) 0/1
Leon Hulleman (1445) Derry 0/2

2. Richard Montgomery (1355) Sullivan	2/3

3. Ananda Srinivasan (1367) MCB 2/3

4. Andrew Wright (1314) (captain) MCB	0.5/3

5. Simon Wright (U/g) 1/3

6. Robin Brown (U/g) 3/3

With the Ulster Senior Championship no longer played over the Christmas vacation period, the UCU Committee considered there was still a market for a tournament at that time of year.

With New Year's Day falling on a Sunday, Monday 2nd January was a public holiday so this seemed the ideal day to stage a one-day tournament. It was given the title of Ulster Rapidplay Championship, and it is hoped that this might become a regular fixture in the Ulster chess calendar. It was encouraging for the future to see that of the 27 players competing, 12 were schoolchildren.
