Glorney Cup Fund Tournament

While the chess season has not yet fully begun, the second Glorney Cup Fund One-day tournament at Queen’s University Students' Union marked a successful pipe-opener. The big question everyone was asking was how would the Gillen brothers fare after picking up the British Under-12 and Under-13 title in Plymouth

In the last round of the Open, Stephen Gillen faced former Glorney Cup player Howard Beckett on Board One while twin brother Adrian played the recent winner of the Soanes All—Play—All at the British Championships in Plymouth, Martin Kelly. In between, Cambridge University player Hon Tsang squared up against Greg Jackson. Stephen clinched the draw he needed to secure first place on tiebreak on 5/6 from Hon Tsang, who beat Jackson, and his own brother, Adrian, who cleverly exploited Kelly’s inexplicable failure to capture a gambit pawn in the French Advanced.

Joint fourth on 4.5 points were Howard Beckett and John McKenna.

In the Novices Under—1200, which, in recent tournaments, has been an unqualified success in attracting new blood to chess events, 22 keen players fought it out for first place; although not a complete 100 per cent success, but a "parte" success for Colin Parte (Banger); he only took the title on tiebreak on 5/6 from Stephen Shaw (Newtownards), with evergreen Sam Cree (Fords) on 4.5 in third, the same score as age prize winner Ken Yuen (Methody).

For details of the next one—day tournament at the Winston Hotel, Bangor, on Saturday, September 23, ring R. Henderson (at 852320).

Irish News: Chess Notes by Rookie 7-12-1989

The European Team Championships - taking place in Haifa, Israel - saw USSR smash England 5-1 in Round 7 to lead on 29 points ahead of Yugoslavia, 26, and Czechoslovakia, 25, with England eighth on 23.5. Scotland are joint 19th to 21st on 20.5, while Ireland and Wales share 23rd to 25th place with Turkey on 19.5, ahead of Belgium, Luxembourg and Cyprus.

Meanwhile, World Champion Garry Kasparov easily won the Belgrade International Tournament on 9.5/11, three points ahead of joint seconds, Timman and Ehlvest. This almost guarantees that his FlDE rating next month will be over 2800, thereby beating Fischer’s world record rating of 2785. Then, last weekend Kasparov took part in the Infolink European Speed Championships at the Atheneum Club, London, a knockout event for eight players.

Talking of speed chess, the UCU is holding its third Glorney Active Chess Tournament at the Conference Room, QUB Students' Union, on Saturday, 16th December from registration at 9 to 9.30am. to prize giving at 6.45pm. Held in two sections, Open (1200 +) and Novices (under 1200), the event counts for both Active Chess ratings and Grand Prix points and entry fee is £3.
To avoid a late entry surcharge of £1, notify your entry before 10pm, December 15 to Alex Beckett, 33 Malone Hill Park, Belfast (tel. 660620).

Two K's

Irish News: Chess notes by Rookie, 2nd Sept 1989

Predictably, the two K’s, Kasparov and Karpov, share the lead with three others after eight rounds of the latest World Cup in Sweden. Kasparov has a slender lead in this series, as you would expect of the World Champion, but how long will he hold this title?

Controversy reigns once again in FlDE, the ruling body of world chess, who have decreed that Lyons, would be the venue for the next World Championship match, without consulting Kasparov. He has threatened not to defend his title, while Karpov has not ruled out winning the world title by default again, as he did in 1975 when Fischer also rejected FlDE’s conditions.

But all this presumes Karpov will win the current series of Challenger matches — which have reached the semi-final stage — being held in London on October 2-22 between Speelman and Timman and between Karpov and Yusupov.

It was sad to hear of the tragic drowning last month in Spain of Ernie McCarter, captain of Civil Service C. Our sympathy goes to his family, particularly his brother, Albert, from Bangor Chess Club.
