M.C.B Chess 2004/2005

Over the past two years the Methodist College chess club has enjoyed remarkable success in both team and individual competitions. The highlight was perhaps the team’s winning of the All Ireland College’s Under 19 Championship in Dublin in 2004.

The Ulster Schools Individuals Tournament

This year Ulster’s most prestigious schools individual tournament took place in R.B.A.I and featured an unprecedented number of first place successes for Methody players.

The Under 19 section of the tournament featured the strongest field in several seasons, with nineteen players competing over five rounds. After drawing his first round game, Chris Millar completed a run of four consecutive wins, culminating with a win as black in a tense final round decider against Calum Leitch, to become Ulster Under 19 champion for the first time with 4.5 points from 5. Andrew Wright, in his first year in the top section, finished the tournament in a respectable sixth place with 3 points. Ryan Deane finished in eighteenth position with one point from five. Nicola Hood, competing in the same section, gained 2.5 points to successfully retain her title as Ulster Schoolgirls’ champion.

In the Under 16 group, Simon Wright, enjoying his best form of the season, beat off strong competition (including Sullivan’s Richard Montgomery and Robin Brown) to win the tournament with 5.5 points from six. Philip Chen and Frank Wu also performed well and finished fourth and sixth respectively.

Another Methody player, Ananda Srinivasan, managed to win all of his games to become Ulster Under 14 champion.
