Top young chess players enjoy afternoon of chess
Numbers were slightly down so we put the Primary students into the Secondary section. This gave them an opportunity to test their skills against some very tough opponents. 7 rounds were played with each player having 15mins. Between rounds the players solved chess problems, had a short session on the technique of reloading. Which follows a simple 1-2-3 process:
One you place a piece where it can be taken
Two your opponent takes it
Three you advantageously re-take with another piece
See if you can see how reloading wins the two positions shown below: answers at the bottom of this page.

John Dawson and Eoin McCorkindale shared first place. Both undefeated their only non-win being the drawn game when they played each other.
Both Pheobe Patterson with 3.5 and Calvin Patterson with 3 gave a good reckoning of themselves against tough opposition.
Solutionsto the two problems above:
Position1: 1. Nd5! Qd6 2. Nxf6+! Qxf6 3. Bxg5 The Knight on d5 is safe because if taken the Queen reloads on d5 with a double attack.
Position2: 1. Re5! if taken the pawn reloads and wins material.
