British Championships 2009

The British Chess Championships, which are organised by the English Chess Federation, are to be held in the Riviera International Conference Centre, Torquay from 26th July to 8th August 2009. As well as the Championship itself, there are a considerable number of subsidiary events, both for adults and young players.

The Ulster Chess Union is entitled to nominate two players to compete in the main British Championship. The winner and runner-up in the immediately previous Ulster Championship are entitled to automatic nomination. However, the winner, Stephen Scannell, and runner-up, John Cairns, from the 2008 Ulster Championship have both decided not to take up their automatic entitlement to enter the 2009 British Championship. In those circumstances, the Executive Board of the UCU, is responsible for deciding who should be nominated.

The Board has decided that James McDonnell, who finished third in the 2008 Ulster Championship, should be nominated and he has accepted. This leaves one further place available for UCU players. If you are a UCU member and are interested in being nominated to play in the British Championship, please contact UCU Chairman David McAlister by phone at 028 92638857 or e-mail at president@ulsterchess.org. The closing date for putting forward your name is 15th June 2009. The Executive Board will decide who, if anyone will be nominated for the second available place.

Any player wishing to enter any of the subsidiary events should enter directly with the English Chess Federation. The official website for the Championships, where you will be able to find information on the event, is at http://www.britishchess09.com.
